More About Heysham

Heysham Port offers comprehensive facilities for a diverse range of general cargo and is home to one of Europe's major offshore supply bases, providing logistics support to one of the largest gas fields in UK waters.

The Port is served by a rail link running right to a quayside passenger terminal and road access is to be further enhanced by construction of the final phase of a new link road between Heysham and the M6 motorway, given the go-ahead by UK Transport Minister Paul Clark at the beginning of 2009.

New linkspans have been the key element of a multi-million pound investment in the port by its owners, Peel Ports, the UK's second largest ports group. The new bridges were designed and their introduction timed to meet the requirements of the new generation of ro-ro freight ferries being introduced by major Irish Sea operators, Seatruck Ferries and Norfolk Line. The Isle of Man Steampacket Company also operates modern passenger - freight vessels on its twice daily sailings to Douglas, Isle of Man.

Heysham Ferry Port

The charming seaside village of Heysham, in the Lancaster district, on the edge of Morecambe Bay is just a few miles from both Lancaster and Morecambe. It’s full of attractive 17th century cottages and its colourful floral displays have twice won it Britain in Bloom’s Gold Small Village!

British landscape painter JMW Turner must have also thought it rather an agreeable place, he painted Heysham with a spectacular Lakeland backdrop when he was touring Lancashire back in the 1790s. There has been some kind of settlement in Heysham since the Stone Age, and consequently the whole area is dotted with ancient sites, including one of the finest Anglo-Viking sites in the North West. Enjoy the clean sea air on a stroll around The Barrows, an area of cliffs where many tools and pottery artefacts have been found, suggesting it was once an ancient burial ground. Within a relatively small area you’ll find woodland, open grassland, sandy beaches and deep rock pools.

Discover more about Heysham’s history at the Heysham Heritage Centre, housed in a beautiful 17th century farmhouse. It’s a whopping 66 miles from Heysham to the Isle of Man, that’s around three times further than England’s closest point to France. But you can take a ferry there from Heysham Harbour – it’ll take you about 3.5 hours.

When the sun comes out, whisk the family down to Half Moon Bay, a bijou stretch of sand that is perfect for a summer picnic. Or head to the tiny church of St Peter’s in Heysham, which perches dramatically on the Cliffside. This Grade-I listed building dates from the 14th century but inside you’ll find a hogback stone dating back to Viking times. Adjacent St Patrick’s Chapel is also worth a visit, where stone graves thought to date back to 11th century are dotted around the historic ruins.

Nature lovers should head to Heysham Nature Reserve, where a variety of habitats shelter numerous species of butterfly, moths, dragonfly and migrant birds. After you’ve explored Heysham’s sights you’ll probably have worked up quite an appetite - luckily there’s a choice of places to eat! The Royal Hotel is an atmospheric pub where log fires crackle invitingly and there’s a great choice of hearty dishes and cask-conditioned beers. Or why not taste the area’s most famous export, Morecambe Bay shrimps at the Curiosity Corner Café in the heart of the historic village of Heysham.
