More About St Margarets Hope

St Margaret's Hope is the third largest settlement in Orkney and sits at the head of a sheltered bay at the northern end of South Ronaldsay. The village has become a busier place than it used to be following the opening of a car ferry link to Gills Bay near John o' Groats by Pentland Ferries.

St. Margaret’s Hope is the main town on South Ronaldsay, the closest Orkney Island to mainland Scotland, situated approximately six miles across the Pentland Firth opposite John O Groats.

Pentland ferries operate across the Firth from Caithness to the port in St Margaret’s Hope, bringing an abundance of visitors to the ancient town.

St Margarets Hope is a popular tourist destination ideal for nature enthusiasts, walkers, cyclists and divers. There are shops and amenities, award winning restaurants and various holiday accommodations to choose from including B&B’s, self-catering cottages and back-packers hostels.

St Margarets Hope Ferry

St Margaret’s Hope is surrounded with beautiful golden sand beaches, cliffs, lochs, rocks and heathland and is abundant with wildlife and sea-bird colonies including puffins, terns, corncrake and many more. The clean clear waters of the Scapa Flow attract divers to see marine life including seals, whales, dolphins and porpoises and to explore the ship-wrecks of the German fleet scuttled in 1919 and other sunken ‘blockships’.

There are wildlife and history tours by foot, boat, bus, bike and Land-rover, fishing is available either off the barriers or by hiring a boat. Other attractions include the Orkney Marine Life Aquarium, the Workshop and Loft Gallery’ selling home-made knitwear and Orkney crafts and the Hoxa Tapestry Gallery with hand-woven tapestries detailing the life and landscapes of Orkney.

Attractions at St Margarets Hope & Orkney Islands

The village's growth owed much to the establishment of a herring fishery here in the early 1800s, and this was consolidated through the development of a naval base in Scapa Flow during the two world wars. Fishing has diminished in importance, but the harbour, boatyard and slipway areas remain very active, even when the ferry isn't berthed.
